The Death Penalty

If I could ever be accused of flip-flopping, it would be on this issue. I have a hard time with this, because I would hope that every person would have the opportunity to be saved, even rapists and murderers. However, when reading about heinous crimes, like this, and this it makes me think that maybe the Death Penalty is a good thing. Right now, I am for the Death Penalty. I believe the government does and should have the right to make the penalty for certain heinous crimes death. The Medellin case is certainly one. I also believe the Cooey case is one. I was not a juror in either, but a jury did hear these cases and appeal after appeal after appeal allowed these executions to go forth. Should they be stopped over a technicality? I don't think so, especially as these technicalities are not of the tampered evidence sort, they are stupid technicalities.

In the case of Cooey, they are saying he is too fat for lethal injection and he might 'suffer' from the effects of the potassium chloride. He might be too fat for the drug that is used to sedate him to work properly. ( BTW, I know an anesthetist who said; "If it doesn't work, I'll just use more.") I'm sure it won't be as bad as the rape and murder of the two young women whose lives he ended. But, if you really want to go down that path, that you're too fat for lethal injection, I have a few alternatives for you; Old Sparky, the Gallows, the Guillotine, a Firing Squad, Concrete Boots, etc. Maybe you should be put on The Rack for a little while before your meeting with the Gallows. Then I think it should all be on Pay Per View, with part of the proceeds going to the victims families, and the rest going to law enforcement and crime prevention. I think if executions were public again, crime would drop significantly.

In the case of Medellin, the (most likely) ACLU lawyers are saying that the Mexican Consulate was never contacted. So they waited 15 years to determine that this illegal immigrant, rapist, murdering scumbag should get a chance to speak to the Mexican consulate? I'm sorry, too late. You should have thought of that 15 years ago. Or 10 years ago. Or 5 years ago. Your time's up pal. As far as listening to international courts, I have this to say; Stay in Europe and call us when you're ready for us to save you again and maybe we'll help you out. Just stay out of American affairs when it comes to the execution of the scum who have voluntarily come here.

I've gotten pretty fired up about this issue because when you see the crimes, any sane person would demand justice. What justice can a state or nation truly give in these types of cases? There is only one justice I can think of here. That is death. If these rapists and murderers repent of their sins and truly come to Jesus, then I say; "Welcome Brother, I'll see you on that Day!" But even if they do TRULY repent, it doesn't change their crimes on Earth, or the consequences that come with their crimes.

One last thing, the arguments against the death penalty are usually that it violates the Eighth Amendment. Specifically, cruel and unusual punishment.

The Eighth Amendment:

Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel AND unusual punishments inflicted. (emphasis mine)

I would argue that death for murder is not cruel OR unusual. Most nations throughout history (until recently) have used death as a punishment for certain crimes. I would say death as a punishment is normal. Therefore if a death sentence WAS cruel, (such as being tied to two Hummers going in opposite directions, pulled in half and left for vultures to pick at you) it would still not violate the eighth amendment. It would be cruel, but not unusual. If the penalty for rape was death, it might meet the qualifications of unusual, (though I honestly doubt it) but if it was carried out in a humane manner, ie. lethal injection, it also would not violate the eighth amendment. Just a few things to chew on and start some discussion.

I agree.

Personally I think the most humane and effective way to execute someone is to drug them to sleep, then wrap their head with dynamite and light 'em off in the middle of a field. It might sound .. unusual.. but it would instantly and effectively render their brain into a billion tiny tidbits. Instant annihilation of the conscious self. Of course I doubt that would placate the more ardent opponents of the death penalty.

Googleads idea is a good one.
And if the dynamites to..uh..messy, perhaps a bullet to the brain.

I've always thought a sure fire way (pun intended) would be to force them to watch hours and hours of Katie Couric doin the news. Ah, but then there's that "cruel" thing again. No, dynamite or a bullet would be more humane.

But what if the person really IS innocent?? It happens all the time where somebody's wrongfully found guilty. I'm kidding, I'm kidding! Fry em.

Nestor said...

Linda,

Fry 'em? I was thinking you'd either take the middle ground or the first part of your statement would be how you'd really feel. Interesting.

RecknHavic said...

Chicken fry em!

OK, so I just read that the execution of Medellin is in a 'holding pattern'. Can anyone with cable tell me what's going on? The article said the window closes at midnight.

RecknHavic said...

They toasted him last nite. Scratch one rapist/torturer/murderer.

The biggest joke of this whole thing was the Mexican Consultant thing. This guy (Medellin) had lived in the US since the age of 3.

Nestor said...

Hooray Rick Perry! I'm not a huge fan of him, but he got this one right. Thank goodness it wasn't Chris Bell. Bell would have probably pardoned him and given him money for his 'inconvenience'.

Funny, the so-called "Christians" Nestor and Recknhavic seemed to have forgotten the 10 commandments (specificly the one that says 'thou shaln't kill'.)

Nestor said...

It's funny Stan, since you want to quote the Law, here's another teaching from the Law.

"'If anyone takes the life of a human being, he must be put to death. Anyone who takes the life of someone's animal must make restitution—life for life. If anyone injures his neighbor, whatever he has done must be done to him: fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. As he has injured the other, so he is to be injured. Whoever kills an animal must make restitution, but whoever kills a man must be put to death." (Leviticus 24:17-21)

We've already established the basis for capital punishment many times (in blog covos) w/ Stan. Your typical silly statements have become rather bland.

Find some new material would ya.

RecknHavic said...

New material for Stan...

Instead of "so-called", how about "alleged".

Instead of "straw man" how about "argumentum ad populum".

Instead of "supposed" how about "imagined".

Instead of "republican'ts" how about "repudian'ts".

Hope that was helpful.

Actually, I was quoting a Bible (which certainly *SHOULDN'T* be law.)

Y should I, when the old material works so well for me????

Nestor said...

Stan,

Torah is translated as teachings or law.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Even if it were Nestor, how do you know that the translation is accuarate????

BTW: Seriously, after this morning, you probably won't see me until (probably early) next week.

Wish me a great vacation!!!!

Have a great vacation!

RecknHavic said...

Stan,

Have a good vacation.

Regardless of all the political and religious (or lack there of) stuff; I still consider you a friend. We all are the original GB 4 after all.

Nestor said...

Stan,

I think you missed my point...again. Anyway, have a great vacation.

Nestor said...

Stan,

Where're you going?

RecknHavic said...

Nest,

Ever been to Hill Berts Hamburgers in Austin? Really good!

Nestor said...

I've heard of it, but haven't been there. People say it's really good though.

RecknHavic said...

Go to Hill Berts.

Stan Rosenthal said...

I went to Fort Worth. Sure that doesn't sound like much of a vacation, but I had a great time.

Stan Rosenthal said...

I believe that since this is a death penalty state, that Bush and Cheney should be executed for their treason.

Linda said...

Welcome back, Stan! Glad you had a good time...

I've only been to the Metroplex a couple of times but haven't been real impressed. I'm sure I've been to the wrong parts and all, but it just seemed like one giant suburb. A suburb that goes on and on and on. But I'm sure there's great things to do. I'm glad you had a good time.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Nestor my friend, you didn't seem to respond to my comment about my thinking that Bush and Cheney should be executed (for their treason.)

That's because you don't seem to know that it's really a Triplex. Denton is the top of the triangle of the D/FW/Denton triangle.

If you REALLY knew Denton, you REALLY would be impressed. :-)

Stan Rosenthal said...

Denton, Texas: If you lived there you'd be home by now.

Nestor said...

Stan,

I ignored it because it's stupid. If I wanted to be stupid like that I'd say Bill Clinton should be executed for HIS treason. He ordered special operations troops not to fire on Bin Laden when they had him in their sights. Bill Clinton had the chance to stop 9/11 and he didn't. Now I don't truly think he should be executed, but using your logic, and argument could be made.

RecknHavic said...

Usin Stan *IL*logic could be detrimental to your mental health.

Funny poll, Nestor. I felt a little trapped, but I voted anyway!

Projection.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Let's get back to the subject of the origination of this post/thread.

IMHO Bush and Cheney should be executed for their treason.

Nestor said...

Stan,

Straw Man? Straw Man doesnt seem to fit what I said. You are saying Bush and Cheney should be executed for treason, even though they have not committed treason. Using your logic, I said Clinton should also be executed for treason. I don't really think Clinton committed treason, but he made some bad decisions. Letting Bin Laden go was one of those bad decisions that has had huge consequences. If Clinton had had the guts to take out Bin Laden, we might not be at war right now. It's hard to say, but it's possible. Still I don't think Clinton committed treason. Similarly, Bush may have made mistakes, but he hasn't committed treason.

I do think that if anyone DOES actually commit treason, which results in the loss of life or severely impairs the nation, they should be executed, by hanging, in the public square. Bring back public executions!

RecknHavic said...

Hang em high!

Nestor said...

Although, if you want to talk about SEDITION, well most Democrats have committed sedition along with most mainstream media outlets. Many of the mainstream media outlets also HAVE committed treason by printing classified information. Bring back the sedition act, and bring up Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, Dick Durbin, John Kerry, John Murtha, Barack Obama and others on charges of sedition by providing comfort and aid to the enemies of the United States in a time of war.

RecknHavic said...

You've been listenin to Savage, haven't you?

Nestor said...

I actually rarely listen to him now. I work when he's on the radio, and if I'm in the car when he's on my family is usually in the car. Carmen hates talk radio, so we usually don't listen to it. I'd like to listen to him, I just don't get the chance very often. But I agree with him that we need to bring back the sedition act. It should be in effect for any military operation that our troops are engaged in.

I understand criticism. That falls under freedom of speech, but the Democrats have crossed the line on many occasions, saying things that are not true which put the troops in greater danger than they are already in. Oh, add to my list Pinchy Salzburg, though it could be argued that he should be brought up on treason charges for printing classified information.

RecknHavic said...

Savage is cool. I actually catch him more than most a the talk jocks due to him bein on durin drive home time.

I've read his three (or atleast 3 political) books and they're very good. I really enjoy his personal stories.

Stan,

There is a difference between respecting or even liking a person and worshiping a person and placing them on a pedestal higher than God.

There are however a large group of individuals who have placed a certain man on a pedestal and are presently worshipping him as 'lord and god'. The group is liberals and the man is Barack Hussein Obama. The lust by the left for Obama could possibly bring about the next Lenin, Castro, Stalin or even Domitian.
