Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. (1 Peter 3:15b) Five parts Rican, Four parts Irish and one part who knows what, yet somehow: ALL-AMERICAN!

T.R.
Theodore Roosevelt is probably my favorite president of all time. I don't think he was the best, that would probably be either Washington or Lincoln. However, he is right up there. He led the nation in a time of relative peace, even though he served honorably in the Army. He was a young Governor, Vice President, and President. Though conservative, he cared about the environment. (in a true sense, unlike hypocrites like Al Gore) He believed in the free-market, yet didn't allow big business to run amok. While I believe that Winston Churchill was more important in the grand scheme of the 20th century, America needs a President much like T.R. today. Here are a few quotes from T.R. that I enjoy.
A thorough knowledge of the Bible is worth more than a college education.
Theodore Roosevelt
A typical vice of American politics is the avoidance of saying anything real on real issues.
Theodore Roosevelt
A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.
Theodore Roosevelt
Believe you can and you're halfway there.
Theodore Roosevelt
Don't hit at all if it is honorably possible to avoid hitting; but never hit soft.
Theodore Roosevelt
Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country.
Theodore Roosevelt
Never throughout history has a man who lived a life of ease left a name worth remembering.
Theodore Roosevelt
Order without liberty and liberty without order are equally destructive.
Theodore Roosevelt
Rhetoric is a poor substitute for action, and we have trusted only to rhetoric. If we are really to be a great nation, we must not merely talk; we must act big.
Theodore Roosevelt
The pacifist is as surely a traitor to his country and to humanity as is the most brutal wrongdoer.
Theodore Roosevelt
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.
Theodore Roosevelt
There can be no fifty-fifty Americanism in this country. There is room here for only 100% Americanism, only for those who are Americans and nothing else.
Theodore Roosevelt

Great quotes! He's my dad's fav prez as well. Shame he wasn't president durin the war; probably woulda been shorter. My one gripe w/ TR is the independent run; thinkin it was ego driven. But still, a great president.
"Educate a man in mind and not morals, and you educate a menace to society." Teddy Roosevelt
Not sure if that's verbatim, but you get the point.
Yeah,
I don't know a whole lot about that part of his life. I'm not sure if he thought that the Republicans were too beholden to big business. Kinda like the 'Wall Street Journal Conservatives' of today. The kind that believe; "If it's good for business it's good for America"
I think we need to keep an eye on business and their practices. Not to get in their way, but to make sure they are ethical and moral in their practices. Money can confuse your view of the world, and it happens big time in big business. Much like Carmen's post about chocolate.
> ... I think we need to keep an eye on business and their practices. ...
Ah, spoken like a true Liberal. It's called "regulation".
Yes Stan, but I think we have far different approaches to regulation. I think we should regulate practices that are harmful to the public. Practices like putting mercury in lightbulbs. Putting mercury in dental fillings. That should be regulated, not regulating profits like you liberals want to do.
> ... regulating profits like you liberals want to do.
Straw man.
So you don't believe in a windfall profits tax like Barry Obama?
Windfall profit taxes don't tax the "profit", they tax the "ripoffs".
"The wall
On which the *profit* spoke
Is cracking
At the seams" - King Crimson ('Epitaph')
Stan,
So who gets to decide in your world what the right amount of profit is? Oil Companies don't make that much profit, pound for pound. Yes, they make billions of dollars, but they sell a whole lot of oil. The markup on oil is something like 8%. (It may be even less) If you look at the markup on clothing, or any retail item for that matter it's in the 500% ballpark. Why don't you want a windfall profits tax on that?
> ... Oil Companies don't make that much profit, pound for pound.
ROFLMAO!!!! Why are you shilling for big oil?
> Yes, they make billions of dollars, but they sell a whole lot of oil.
*MY* oil.
YOUR oil Stan? Did you own land that an oil company stole from you?
I'll put it in terms maybe you can understand (since it's your intention to make the bible law) -
(supposed) God placed everything here on Earth for Man to take advantage of.
NOWHERE in the Bible does it mention "corporations".
Stan,
You believe everything the (supposed)fair minded media says, don't you?
So you're for government owning all business. Are you a fascist Stan?
Reck, red-herring.
Nest, straw man.
Actually, Reck does have a point to not believe everything even the most fair-minded media says. No person or even media outlet can get everything correct 100% of the time.
