Justice Sotomayor

“I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life”

Sonia Sotomayor, from a 2001 speech at the annual Judge Mario G. Olmos Law and Cultural Diversity Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley.

I think it's a foregone conclusion at this point that Sonia Sotomayor will be confirmed as Supreme Court Justice to replace David Souter. (barring any tax problems) But I thought a post on her was warranted. Originally, I believed that she was a good pick, from a certain point of view. She was spun as a moderate, a slightly more liberal version of Sandra Day O'Connor. I thought: "It could be a lot worse." But she seems to be worse than I originally thought. Her racist comment from above shows that to her, in 2001 at least, justice is not blind. Below is a video of her speaking at the Duke University School of Law, and she states that the appeals court, (and eventually the Supreme Court) is a place for policy to be made. Call me crazy, but I've read Article III of the Constitution and it says nothing about policy being made in the courts. But maybe her copy is different than mine.

She's a liberal/activist judge. She'll be no different than who she's replacin. As far as I'm concerned she should get the nod (the prez should get to seat who he wants) barring something illegal. Repubs and conservatives should take the high road and vote for her (unlike those cheap/weaselly liberals who fought every Bush appt).

Do I like the pic, no. Am I glad that there's finally a hispanic SCOTUS, yes.

I'm guessing this was Reck. I think she will be seated, I think she probably should be confirmed, however she was being painted as a moderatate when she's an ideologue. I think the Republicans should ask her very serious questions. I wouldn't be surprised if the give her a very close vote even if it's just payback for the Roberts/Alito nonsense that the Dems did. I don't like the racist comment or her belief in creating law through the courts system, but that's not really any different than Souter.

The Hispanic on the court stuff...eh. I want the first Hispanic on the court to be a success. A real success not just a fabricated one.

Yeah, it was me; didnt even know she had a blogger acct.

I look at it like this: Obama isnt a prez that's gonna do much I like; but Im proud that my country finally elected a blk guy. Its the same w/this judge chick.

I think that possibly the best example was Jackie Robinson. When the Dodgers decided to bring in a player from the Negro leagues, they pulled in the best man who was a great player. There were arguably other players better than Jackie, but he was the best to be able to be successful in the game and take the heat that would be put on him. Now our country has come a LONG way since then, but I would have liked the first black president and first hispanic SC Justice to be like Jackie.

Robinson was pretty darn good, but i get your point.

Sotomayor's a sho-in & should fit in well seein that she's got a net worth round a million & ahalf.

The oligarchy lives on!
