St. Patrick's Day

Well I wouldn't be much of an IRISH Rican if I didn't post something for St. Patrick's Day. I just got back from North Carolina late Sunday night (or early Monday morning if you want to be technical about it) and I worked this evening, so I'm a little behind. Anyway, I didn't drink any beer tonight. I usually like to drink a Guinness on St. Patrick's Day. Maybe I'll have one tomorrow. (which is technically later today) Maybe they'll be on sale!

It's funny. I had heard that the snakes thing (The belief that St. Patrick banished all snakes from Ireland) is untrue. To clarify, I checked with the most reliable source at my disposal at this time of night. ;) According to Wikipedia, (which I strangely trust more than I should) Patrick never drove snakes from Ireland as snakes were never on Ireland post-Ice Age. There is a possibility that this belief refers to Patrick banishing the use of snake symbols in Pagan worship on the island however. Anyway, I can't really think of anything else to post on the subject, and I'm really tired. Good Night.

Welcome home!
Hope your Mom's doin better now.

So you gotta "look" huh? You know, the only cure for prejudice is generational. Each generation is less prejudice than the one before it (unless their taught not to be). The "Rev" Wright comes to mind.
Growin up in Houston (which is richly diverse) never really saw much bigotry.
Except against "yankees" of course ;)

Ah, so *THAT'S* Y KUHT Channel 8 has been running so many Irish related things during their (current) pledge drive.

It's a "Rare, Medium, Well Done". (actually, I'm plaguarizing that from the Dallas PBS station's advertising.)

And what Reck says about Houston's diversity is true. But it wasn't always the case. From my understanding of Houston's history, we even had race riots (like, back in around '21?)

"Got a feeling '21, is gonna be a good year
'Specially if you and me see it in, together" - the Who ('21' from Tommy)

I remember when that all white jury let those cops that beat the hell outta Rodney King go free, there were riots everywhere (LA, Atlanta, even Dallas); there were none in Houston or SA.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck, there were no riots in Dallas 'nor Atlanta when the (supposed) decision came out in the (cops that beat up) Rodney King case. Certainly justice wasn't served in that case.

Anonymous said...

Stan,

Actually there were "incidents" (maybe not full fledged riots) in Big D and Atlanta at that time.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck, incidents like perhaps, what I would call "protests" (1st Amendment protected descent)? I would believe that if you said it like that.

It's funny how the left and the right both use the constitution to back up their political beliefs. How can the same document be interpreted so differently? The left loves to talk about free speech, as long as it isn't conservative talk radio. Conservative talk radio that tries to share conservative ideas and point out the hypocrisy of the left and at the same time provide for entertaining listening for some reason is bad, yet if some left wing lunatic says they want to kill George Bush, well that's protected free speech. They also seem forget that the first amendment talks about Freedom OF Religion, not freedom from religion.

Nest,
The left understands the intent of the 1st Amendment. They intentionally distort it to aid their warped mindset.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Nest -
> It's funny how the left and the right both use the constitution to back up their political beliefs.

There's nothing funny about it. Our Constitution is our Country (or, it's supposed to be.)

> How can the same document be interpreted so differently?

False question. Both sides aren't interpreting any differently, only one side is. The "otherside" is lying about it.

Stan Rosenthal said...

err., left out a word or two, I'll emphasise the missing words: ... only one side is *INTERPRETING IT*. The "otherside" is lying about it.

Nestor said...

Stan,

Are you part of the left that wants Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Beck, Ingraham, Levin, etc, etc. silenced? Maybe you don't, but your party does, and they are going to try to assault free political (conservative) speech. With Obama or Clinton and a democratic congress, they will attempt to push these guys (and girls) off of the air. They probably won't be able to get the big ones off, but the smaller shows could be forced off of the air, even if the audience is bigger than what they are replaced by. But the dems don't believe in the free market, do they?

On the subject of freedom of religion; the 1st amendment says freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM religion, do you agree with that?

Anonymous said...

Stan *INTERPRETS*

If you disagree w/ him you're a moron.
If you make a factual case for your belief you're lying.
If you ask him a question that he has no answer for you're a *STRAW* man.
If you directly answer a question from him you're a right-wing lying propaganda type.

Maybe we should just "jump-back, honkycat". What's square is orange and what's up is tuesday. %^Intellegent George #x

Nestor said...

Stan,

I'll be more direct. Do you believe that speech that you do not necessarily agree with is protected under the constitution? Also do you believe that the constitution also protects the freedom of religion?

Stan Rosenthal said...

Straw man. Attack the real left, you're missing your target as-per-usual.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck -
> Stan *INTERPRETS* (StanNote: the Constitution)

BINGO!!!! I (representing the left) interpret (to the best of my ability) the Constitution of the United States of America. You (to the best of your ability) lie about the Constitution.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Nestor -
> Do you believe that speech that you do not necessarily agree with is protected under the constitution?

Of course. I even protect your ability to speak your mind over on my blog (and there's been like 1,285 spam comments on my site that I've deleted (since I've implemented my new spam fighting technique (about a week ago)) to make certain that your voice doesn't get 'Obscured By Clouds' (Pink Floyd.))

> Also do you believe that the constitution also protects the freedom of religion?

Of course I do. You certainly have the right to believe in a space daddy, IMHO. And I believe that the Constitution (is supposed to) protect that right.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Nestor -
> do you believe ... the constitution ... protects the freedom of religion?

Do you believe that the Constitution is designed to also protect my freedom *FROM* religion?

Re: SLC

Linda, You should still find some decent skiing available at this time around SLC.

But even if you do, or even if you don't, you should trek yourself a couple of hours (drive) North to Lava Springs, Idaho, if you really want to get in tune with any supposed (or even possibly real) God.

Stan Rosenthal said...

PING Reck: I think you owe Jane Fonda an apology.

Stan,

I believe that the constitution protects your right to choose not to believe in God (even though God has made Himself obvious), or to ride the fence as you claim. However, that doesn't mean taking anything that has even a hint of Christianity (or Judaism or Islam, etc) out of the public square. I believe that public funds should not be used to promote any religion. However, I don't see any issue with using public property to display religious items, so long as it is donated and isn't something like a sign that says, 'John the Baptist is cooler than Muhammad.' (even though John is cooler than Muhammad)

Sorry Nest, I'll curb my language from now on. The funny spelled "b" word was meant as a joke. Lately I'm gettn reprimanded everywhere ;)

Stan,
Thanks for the travel advice. Skiing is a thing of the past for me. Once the First Aid guy on the snowmobile got word of my fall when I was still near the top of the hill.. and beat me to the bottom where I landed, I figured it wasn't for me. At least I went out in a blaze of glory, bloody lip and all.

I'll consider goin into Idaho, tho. Wish I had more time...

Nestor: MORE SNOW! The sub's filled w/ the humming of snowblowers as we speak.

Nestor said...

Reck,

No problem. I was close to leaving it. I know it was a joke, but I couldn't leave it on there.

Nestor said...

More snow. Sounds great! I remember the last year I was in CT, we had an April fools snowstorm. March 31st was beautiful, 70 degrees and sunny. I was at the park playing handball with my friends. It was a good day. The next day I woke up to 6 inches of snow. Pretty crazy.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck -
> Stan you're right. I'm sorry that Jane Fonda is such a commie (this portion edited for young readers)

Mu.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Correction: Reck you owe Jane Fonda *TWO* apologies. Not for your redundancy, but -

1) You owe Jane an apology for calling her a "commie", and

2) You owe Jane an apology for calling her a dog.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck is a "blame Americans first" moron. He blames Jane Fonda (an American citizen) first, then he supports our enemies (by being first in line in trying to divide us.)

So in reality, Reck *ALSO* owes *EVERY* American an apology.

Nestor said...

Linda,

How's the weather? ;) Today in Austin it was sunny, not a cloud in the sky and 85. We went to Zilker Park which was great. It was so great that everyone in Travis County decided to go. To avoid paying the parking fee we had to walk about a mile to get to the playground, but it was so beautiful it wasn't that big a deal. I got two Raspas today. The Raspa stand was packed. Oh, I hope I'm not rubbing it in. OK maybe a little. But don't worry, you'll be rubbing it in in July.

> ... However, that doesn't mean taking anything that has even a hint of Christianity (or Judaism or Islam, etc) out of the public square. ...

To be taken out, it has to be placed there in the first place. I say it shouldn't be there in the first place.

I have no problem if you place a cross on your front lawn (though if you were burning it, that has some symbolism that I disagree with), and I have no problem with you having a church to go to.

But this is America, and it's founded on separation of church and state and corp., so I completely disagree that the commons (govermental offices, etc. and public schools, including the Air Force Acadamy) is a place for your religion.

Lin, I errored. It's actually Lava Hot Springs (if you're looking for it on a map) ...

What this says, is that Reck isn't funny.

BTW Reck, you can say the "b" word over on my blog. And I respect Nestor for his decision to not allow it on his blog (since he did allow the rest of your garbage to get out.)

Stan,

The fact that you "idolize" Jane Fonda speaks *VOLUMES* for you.

And here's an idea; try makin a point of your own, rather than *LEECHIN* off of others ideas. Or are you a *TYPICAL* socialist?

BTW, how's the weather in SLC?

Stan Rosenthal said...

Straw man.

You musta missed my comment where I said I *FORGAVE* you. Feel free to comment on my blog as you will. I've even reinstated you to my blog roll.

Stan Rosenthal said...

Dude, if you kick someone off of your blog, don't expect them to read your blog anymore. Sorry I missed your forgiveness. :-)

Oh, you still read it :-0

Stan Rosenthal said...

Guess again, Reck.

Stan Rosenthal said...

BTW Reck: I don't know if you noticed this (LOL!), but since you kicked me off of your blog, there's been a sharp rise in popularity in commenting over here.

So just for it helping out The Irish Rican, I'm glad to have been kicked off of your blog.

:-)

Anonymous said...

Hey, whatever it takes. Maybe Nest should kick you off here energize your blog :}

Stan Rosenthal said...

LOL!

But really, my blog isn't so dependent upon how many comments I get. It's the content that counts over there. :-)

Stan Rosenthal said...

Now if we're gonna judge a blog by how much spam it gets, I think I win hands down. Like almost 1900 spams deleted on my blog since I implemented my new spam catching technique. I think since then, 4 have gotten through it before I deleted them.

It has had an affect. He's down to about 70 spams a day from probably his high of 125 spams a day.

Or he's on spring break. ;-)

You should share your technique w/ Beck, so he'll start bloggn again. Altho, there's probably an Insiders blog. If so, that really sucks; it shouldn't cost money to blog.

Big game for Rockets this sunday (Spurs).

Stan Rosenthal said...

I'll do him the favor of not giving him another outlet for his voice. He looks better when he's not opening his mouth.

Stan Rosenthal said...

(he's down today to about 30 spam comments, BTW)

Stan Rosenthal said...

Reck, if there is an insider's blog, you know it's just got to be a bunch of circle jerks.

Nestor said...

I'll be honest. I don't go to Glenn's site as much. I don't know if the blog is only open to insiders or what, but I'm not paying to post comments on a blog, when so many are free. I don't really like Limbaugh's site because you have to pay for a lot of the extras as well. I guess they are businessmen though, and if people are willing to pay for something that should be free, (or at least much cheaper) then more power to em.

Anonymous said...

There's not an insider blog that I know of, but there's an Insider Forum. (I guess that could be the same thing?) Anyway, it's alright, mostly just people who've gotten to know each talkin. Hey! Kinda like here! I'm an Insider cuz I can't get his radio show here (well, 2 hrs on a really staticy station). Plus I like watchin it. The forum seems kinda complicated cuz of all the pictures and avatars and quotes and blinking cartoons, etc. I just lurk occasionally.

Stan Rosenthal said...

A blog is a type of forum. I guess the simple definition of a forum, is a place where folk can communicate with each other (or 'Circle Jerk' in the case of Bleck's insiders, except Linda, of course.)
